When startup owners Nick Ziegler and Cody Endres contacted me about developing a wrestling website for their new business venture, my first reaction was “Absolutely!” because it’s not everyday that an opportunity to work on something different comes along. Also, the more I got to know them and understand their mission—helping kids learn fundamentals for life and improving their lives through the sport of wrestling—the more I genuinely wanted to provide them with a product that would have a positive impact on growing that business.
EZ Wrestling is all about growing the sport of wrestling and having a positive impact on young athletes lives. While they are primarily a wrestling club providing camps and training sessions, what they are really aiming to provide are disciplines needed to have a successful life when done with the sport of wrestling. They told me at the onset of the project, “It’s no secret that we want to create successful wrestlers, but we also want to create successful people who value service and leadership to others as well.”
Having never gone through developing a website before, I helped guide both Nick and Cody through my creative process–from “Discovery,” to “Design,” to “Development,” and finally to “Delivery.” Since they were a new startup, they had very little content gathered and a small budget to work with. However, I designed a boldly colored and balanced layout that allowed for a mix of content and potential growth throughout, adding the ability for them to have control over their own written content.
I gauge success based on what clients tell me after completing their project. Both Nick and Cody feel confident going into what will be their first team camp offering this year, and our work together helped fill a large hole in their marketing efforts. I admire these guys going after their dreams and serving a greater purpose. Something they once shared with me resonated because its a shared sentiment; “Wrestling is a sport where relationships are founded through hard work, discipline, and adversity. We expect our student athletes go through all of these and we will be alongside them as they engage in these learning experiences.”
